Altitude: A Pioneer in the Night Sky

Episode 29: Altitude — Sophie Blanchard

Altitude brings listeners into the daring, uncertain world of early flight through the life of Sophie Blanchard, the French aeronaut who became the first woman to pilot a balloon alone and the first professional woman balloonist. In an era when ascent itself was still a public marvel, Sophie made the sky not merely a spectacle, but a calling.

From celebratory flights and official appearances to the isolation of the gondola high above the earth, her career carried her into a realm few people had ever seen—and fewer still were willing to enter. After the death of her husband and ballooning partner, Jean-Pierre Blanchard, she continued flying on her own, completing more than 60 ascents and becoming a celebrated figure in France.

This is not only the story of a balloonist who rose above the limits of the age. It is the story of Sophie Blanchard: a pioneer whose courage, discipline, and singular command of the sky transformed an extraordinary novelty into a life’s work—and whose legacy belongs among the earliest and boldest chapters in the history of human flight.

Sophie Blanchard during her balloon ascent in Milan, 15 August 1811.

This 1811 engraving by Luigi Rados depicts the pioneering French aeronaut standing in the ornamented gondola of her balloon, one hand on the rigging and the other holding a flag as the craft rises above the ceremonial gathering below. The ascent took place in Milan before imperial and royal spectators during festivities marking Napoleon Bonaparte’s forty-second birthday.

For Sophie Blanchard, flight was not a novelty or a single act of daring, but a profession. She became the first woman to work as a professional balloonist, building a public career in the early and uncertain age of human aviation. The image preserves an important part of that legacy: not simply a figure associated with ballooning, but an aeronaut visibly in command of her ascent, suspended between the expectations of the world below and the uncharted possibilities of the sky above.
